Travel Day: New Orleans, LA to Lafayette, LA

ODOMETER: 81,765  | TODAY’S MILES: 135 | MILES TRAVELED: 3,820

by Grant

It’s cool this morning at 50 degrees and we’re getting ready to hit the road. The dogs are a bit restless so we take them out for a bit of extra exercise.

New Orleans remains quiet in the early hours and we pack up and exit west. It’s only two hours to Lafayette and we’re visiting with Red Lerille there. We want to see how he’s doing and give Jack the opportunity to photograph some of Red’s various ‘toys’. Red is a collector and restorer of many things and he has invited Jack to photograph some of his planes, cars and motorcycles.

The campground we’re staying at is the KOA Lafayette, in Scott, LA. It’s a really nice park with a lake and we got to front in to the lake and get a nice view. Jack grabbed some drone footage and we wanted to head out to the Cypress Island Preserve nearby, but it closes at 4pm so we will have to go tomorrow.

It’s a chilly night and will reach almost freezing, so we hunker down and get an early night to rise before sunrise to meet Red at his club.

Red is a Health Club owner and has built an immense club, called Red Lerille’s Health Club in Lafayette.

He started out in 4,000s.f. and has built an entire campus which spans many acres and over 200,000s.f. of floor space under roof.

I’m personally looking forward to seeing Red as he has been a mentor to me and is iconic in so many ways, not the least in his humility.
