Travel Day | Big Bend National Park, Terlingua, TX to Carlsbad, NM

ODOMETER: 83,078 | TODAY’S MILES: 289 | MILES TRAVELED: 5,133

We rose early as we have tended to do throughout the trip and both of us were sore. A fifteen mile hike with an over 3,000-foot elevation gain and drop is not a regular occurrence for us and even though we exercise regularly, that massive hike took its toll.

We made our usual coffee and breakfast, spelled the dogs and set about packing up to travel  up to Carlsbad, NM.

The trip up through West Texas was uneventful. Cell service was patchy and we tried to navigate some WiFi issues we’d been having with our cell-based WiFi service. We use a service through FMCA (Family Motor Coach Association) which provides unlimited data, but the patchy network in South West Texas and the bottom corner of New Mexico is testing its capabilities. We decided to get a cell signal booster and hopefully look forward to improved reception in these remote areas.

We eventually arrived in Carlsbad mid-afternoon and did a grocery shop at the Super Walmart. We are getting quite adept at quick in and out shopping trips.

We unhitched the Jeep and travelled indepently the last 20 miles to the Carlsbad KOA RV Park

The KOA RV park is remote, but nicely maintained. Julie and Kayla in Reception were awesome and we quickly got situated at our site. The Park also has a kitchen and we ordered take-out BBQ, which was absolutely excellent.

We are solidly back on the grid now and we all have mixed feelings about it. Being able to access information, shows, movies and more in a blink is a part of our collective lives now. But there’s something freeing about not getting pinged and being constantly connected.

We had a lovely dinner and settled in for the night.
